TOTAL STATE REVENUES DIP MODESTLY IN FY2009

Springfield - For the first time in six years, since ITEF began tracking state revenue, total Illinois state revenue is down from the previous year, according to data from the Illinois Comptroller’s website. Total tax revenue for the first 6 months of FY 2009 decreased $1.2 billion, 3.8%, over the same period in FY 2008. This modest dip in state revenue is not a fiscal crisis. Read more

The legal system, not the press, will determine if Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) has committed any crime by shooting-off his mouth regarding the Senate seat vacated by President Elect Obama. Stupid, ill-advised, possibly rhetorical comments ultimately may not be determined to be a “conspiracy.” But one thing is certain: If Gov. Blagojevich is forced from office and is replaced by Lt. The national media has spoken, Illinois, and it has said that you’re not really all that corrupt — a backhanded compliment for a state with a long, proud heritage of political corruption.
On Dec. 10, USA Today ranked the state the 18th most corrupt in the nation. Soon after, the Dec. 14 New York Times calculated crookedness three ways, placing Illinois at 7th, 22nd, and tied for 10th. All rankings focused on number of convictions. Read more
