About Us
National Taxpayers United of Illinois
National Taxpayers United of Illinois (NTUI) is the largest and most effective statewide taxpayer group in Illinois. NTUI was founded in 1976 and since that time we have helped Illinois citizens save over $97 billion in income, property, sales and other taxes at the state and local levels.
Here are just a few examples of our successes:
- Since 1977, NTUI members defeated 190 property-tax-increase referenda, while losing only 35—a success rate of 84 percent.
- Since 1980, NTUI members defeated more than 100 home-rule referenda, which would have given toxic taxing power to local governments.
- Since 1993, NTUI members defeated state income tax increases that have been proposed in Springfield every single year.
Illinois Taxpayer Education Foundation
The Illinois Taxpayer Education Foundation (ITEF) is a non-profit, charitable 501 (c) (3) organization conducting research on facts, methods, and principles of taxation, government spending and public attitudes on these subjects. ITEF comments can be found in the “Foundation” category in the left-hand navigation.
Despite claims by greedy politicians and bureaucrats that Illinois has a revenue or budget crisis, state revenue is up again in fiscal year 2010. We don’t have a revenue crisis in Illinois, we have a spending crisis.
Tax Accountability
Tax Accountability is the Political Action arm of NTUI. Tax Accountability sends out tax questionnaires to people running for office and endorses those who sign our Illinois Taxpayer Protection Pledge.
Tribute to Alexander “Al” Magnus, Jr. 1926-2002
For over 15 years, Al Magnus was a prime supporter of NTUI and the Illinois Taxpayer Education Foundation. Jim Tobin remarked, “We couldn’t have done it without him,” and he meant that literally. One example of Al’s high-powered, dynamic support: In 1997, Al paid to print and distribute one million copies of the foundation’s famed research study on government school spending in Illinois. A four-page summary of the report was included as an insert in seven Illinois newspapers, including the Peoria Journal Star, Daily Herald and Daily Southtown.
Al Magnus was one of a kind: an authentic patriot, a kind, generous human being, and a champion of liberty. His principles and efforts truly made a difference.
